What's Up Dog: Belly Flops, Jamón Stops & Paw Slaps with Binny the Bichon

For Brendan Dodd, owner of @bagelboyco and bagel maker living in Barcelona, life has been full of flavorful creations and sunny walks—thanks to his five-year-old Bichon Frise, Binny.

Together, they’ve formed a bond that’s not just about bagels and belly rubs, but adventures that span countries. In this interview, Brendan gives us a glimpse into life with Binny, a friendly, clingy “womanizer” who keeps him entertained and on his toes!

Describe Binny in Three Words

Brendan laughs as he describes Binny as "friendly, womanizer, clingy." This little charmer seems to have no problem winning over hearts—whether it’s the neighborhood pizzeria owners or complete strangers during their walks.

If Binny Could Talk, What Would He Say?

“If Binny could talk, I’m sure he’d be asking me when our next walk is or when we’re heading back to Menorca,” Brendan says. “He loves it there, roaming his grandparents' property and doing his own thing. And after that? He’d definitely be asking where the treats are—he’s addicted to them!”

Binny’s Dream Job

Brendan thinks Binny would make an excellent sniffer at an airport or mail facility. “He loves to investigate packages as soon as they arrive at home,” Brendan shares. “We can’t open anything until he’s had a thorough sniff-down.”

The Silliest Thing Binny Does for Attention

Like many dogs, Binny has his own way of saying, Pay attention to me! “He lies on his back, belly up, in the most exposed way possible,” Brendan says. “He knows we can’t resist rubbing his belly. And if that doesn’t work, he’ll give you this intense stare, with a little growl, until you cave and give him the attention he thinks he deserves!”

What's Binny's Guilty Pleasure?

It’s no secret that Binny loves food, but he’s got a particular spot for fresh jamón at the local pizzeria. “He practically drags me there 2-3 times a week because he knows the owners will give him what he wants,” Brendan laughs.

Funniest Trick in Binny’s Bag of Tricks

After every walk, Binny knows it’s time to get his paws cleaned, a ritual he’s not fond of, but he endures for the reward. “When I ask for his paw after cleaning, he’ll excitedly slam it down on my hand like a high-five. It’s adorable!” says Brendan.

Favorite Toy

His favorite toy? A blue monkey gifted by Brendan’s mom. “He loves it so much, my mom sent us six more, so he’s got one at all our friends’ houses!”

Keeping Binny Healthy and Happy

Brendan keeps Binny’s health in check with three daily walks, high-quality Gosby dog food from their local vet, and regular grooming every 2-3 months. He also makes sure Binny’s teeth stay in tip-top shape with dental treats.

A Tip for Fellow Dog Owners

Brendan’s advice for dog parents? “Let your dog be social! Binny has become so much friendlier with people and dogs just by being around them. And let them sniff around during walks—it’s their way of exploring the world.”

A Well-Traveled Pup

Binny’s passport probably has more stamps than most humans! “He’s been to Spain, the Netherlands, all around the U.S., and more,” Brendan says. “He’s even coming with us on a trip to the U.S. in November to visit his grandparents and brothers.

Covid Companion

Brendan reflects on how having Binny made the pandemic much more bearable. “I got Binny right before Covid started, and he made it so much easier to deal with. When we moved to Europe, he helped me meet new people and gave me a reason to go on adventures. He’s my best friend, and I’m so grateful to have him.”

Sounds like Binny is living the dream, and Brendan wouldn’t have it any other way! Keep an eye out for this well-traveled Bichon, as he’s sure to be exploring more cities—and pizzerias—near you!
